چکیده

Polarization measurements are presented for 52 radio-loud QSOs and BL Lac objects. For 9 highly polarized (p> 3%) AGN, these are the first published polarization measurements. Of these 9, 7 are highly-polarized QSOs (HPQs), one is a BL Lac object and another is a likely BL Lac object. Polarization variability is confirmed for some of these new and previously known highly-polarized AGN. While 6 of the HPQs have flat radio spectra are almost certainly blazars, PKS1452−217 is probably a new member of the rare class of radio-loud QSOs that show high polarization by scattering, and is therefore important for testing orientation Unified Schemes. In competition for the highest redshift HPQ are the well-observed QSO PKS0438−43 at z=2.85, with maximum p∼4.7%, and PKS0046−315 at z= 2.72, for which we find p∼13%. Term Optical Variability in Broad Absorption Line QSOs

We present the first results from a pilot programme to monitor the short term optical variability in Broad Absorption Line system QSOs. Intra-night optical variations of ∼ 5% were detected on time scales of ∼ one hour in QSOs 0846+156 and 0856+172. Further, the mean magnitude level decreased in the two objects by ∼ 0.05 and ∼ 0.15 magnitude respectively during the period of our observations. Th...

Cm-wavelength Total Flux and Linear Polarization Properties of Radio-loud Bl Lacertae Objects

We present results from a long-term program to quantify the range of behavior of the cm-wavelength total flux and linear polarization variability properties of a sample of 41 radio-loud BL Lac objects using weekly to tri-monthly observations with the University of Michigan 26-meter telescope operating at 14.5, 8.0, and 4.8 GHz; these observations are used to identify class-dependent differences...

Highly Polarized Optically-selected Bl Lacertae Objects

Observations of candidate BL Lacertae objects spectroscopically selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) reveal a large fraction with high polarization (P > 3%). This result confirms that synchrotron radiation makes an important contribution to the observed optical continuum for most objects in the sample. The SDSS sample can be divided into separate categories, with objects of undeter...

Polarization microvariability of BL Lac objects ⋆

We present the results of a systematic observational campaign designed to search for microvariability in the optical polarization of BL Lac objects. We have observed a sample formed by 8 X-ray-selected and 10 radio-selected sources, looking for rapid changes in both the degree of linear polarization and the corresponding polarization angle. The whole campaign was carried out along the last thre...

On the nature of optical nuclei in FR I radio - galaxies from ACS / HST imaging polarimetry ⋆

We obtained optical imaging polarimetry with the ACS/HRC aboard the HST of the 9 closest radiogalaxies in the 3C catalogue with an FR I morphology. The nuclear sources seen in direct HST images in these galaxies are found to be highly polarized with levels in the range ∼ 2 11 % with a median value of 7 %. We discuss the different mechanisms that produce polarized emission and conclude that the ...
